Guide
Connect ChatGPT to your mailbox
ChatGPT now supports custom MCP connectors across the consumer and team plans — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. That means you can add inboxmcp directly in your ChatGPT account and have it read, search and file mail for you, in the same chat where you already plan your day.
Developer Mode — once, not always
OpenAI gates the "add a custom MCP connector" entry point behind a Developer Mode toggle. The toggle sits in Settings → Apps → Advanced settings. Switch it on, add inboxmcp, and you can switch it right back off. The connector you added stays in Activated apps and keeps working — Developer Mode only controls whether the "Create app" button is visible, not the runtime use.
OpenAI's warning about "increased risk" applies to every connector they haven't reviewed themselves; it isn't a statement about inboxmcp specifically. The same warning would show for any third-party MCP server you connect from the open web.
Setup in four steps
The whole flow takes a couple of minutes. We documented every step with screenshots in the help center:
→ ChatGPT setup guide in the help center
Short version:
- Copy your MCP URL from the inboxmcp portal under Integrations.
- In ChatGPT: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode on.
- Back in the Apps panel: Create app. Paste the URL, pick OAuth as the auth method, acknowledge the risk notice, click Create.
- The OAuth flow opens in your browser. Sign in to inboxmcp, grant access. Done.
What about write actions?
Reading mail works reliably across all plans. Write actions — drafting replies, moving messages, filing into folders — are part of OpenAI's "full MCP" rollout and currently land first on Business, Enterprise and Edu, then on Plus and Pro. Where a write tool isn't accepted yet on your plan, ChatGPT will tell you so and inboxmcp's draft remains available the moment OpenAI flips the switch.
What's next
In parallel we have inboxmcp submitted to the official OpenAI app directory. Once the listing is approved, you'll be able to install inboxmcp from there — no Developer Mode toggle, no risk acknowledgement, just a regular install. We'll post here the moment the badge flips.
